Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country by resigning in the mass movement of students. Currently he is staying in India. In an interview given to the news agency Reuters, Sajeeb Wazed Joy spoke about his mother’s return to the country.

He gave an interview to the news agency Reuters from Washington DC, USA. His interview was published on Wednesday (September 25).

In the interview, when Sheikh Hasina was asked when she can return to the country, she replied that it would depend on her. He is ready to return home to face trial.

Joy said, “Right now I want to keep my party people safe, so I want to raise international awareness about the brutality of party leaders and workers.”

Earlier in an interview last month, he said that Sheikh Hasina is ready to face trial at home for leading the movement demanded by the students. He also said that Awami League wants to compete in the elections.

According to the Reuters report, Sheikh Hasina has been sheltering near Delhi since last month. At this time, many senior leaders of Awami League were arrested for their involvement in the movement that killed more than 1,000 people. Besides, many have gone into hiding.

Joy alleged that since the fall of Sheikh Hasina, many Awami League leaders and activists have been killed. However, representatives of the interim government did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In the interview, Chief of Army Staff General Waqar-uz-Zaman expressed satisfaction with the timeline for elections within 18 months. He commented that this time is much later than expected. Joy said that real reforms and elections in the country are impossible without his party Awami League.
